Turn your phone into a microscope! This article introduces the "Science Maker Mobile Microscope" designed by Professor Hung-Jen Chiang from NTU, which can be enhanced with various modules to achieve lab-level observations. It also explains four simple steps to register and receive the tools, making it easy for science enthusiasts to become desktop explorers.
Turn Your Phone into a 'Microscope'!
Unlike commercial microscopes, the phone microscope in the Science Maker group was designed by Professor Hung-Jen Jiang from National Taiwan University. It can be upgraded with various modules, allowing you to observe scientific images comparable to laboratory-grade equipment right at home.
(A) Mobile Phone Microscope

The mobile phone microscope has the same magnification lens as the phone microscope. Simply clip it onto your phone's camera to achieve approximately 12x magnification. Currently, the mobile phone microscope does not have modular functionality and can only be used independently.
The 'black circle' below the lens is the 'focus assist plate,' which maintains the optimal distance between the lens and the image. Just bring it close, and you can easily find a clear image. It's suitable for outdoor use, and if you clip the mobile phone microscope to the selfie camera, it can be used as an 'inverted phone microscope.'

The phone microscope is the group's first and most important instrument. It can be used independently or with various modules for polarized observation, metallographic observation, and fluorescence observation.

Phone Microscope Compatible with Different Modules
Currently, the clip-on mobile phone microscope cannot be paired with any modules. You need to register for the triangular phone microscope to access these rich variations.
(C) Universal Objective Module

The universal objective module can transform the phone microscope into a research-grade phone microscope with high magnification, suitable for advanced users.
The universal objective module does not include the triangular board or super objective. If you register for the universal objective module, you will only receive 3 long threaded rods, several nuts, and 2 oval plates (as shown above), which cannot be used independently.
If you want a phone microscope with high magnification capability, you need to register for the 'Phone Microscope' + 'Universal Objective Module' + 'Super Objective' together.
The universal objective module features RMS threading, allowing the super objective to be replaced with commercial objectives of 10x, 20x, 40x, 60x, 100x, and other high magnifications.
Phone Microscope + Universal Module ≈ 120-1200x Magnification

(Z) Super Objective

If you're using a research-grade phone microscope and don't have commercial objectives, you must register for the super objective to see high-magnification images.
The super objective provides approximately 20x magnification, with higher magnification achieved when the objective is positioned lower.

(P) Polarization Module

When the molecular structure of a substance has directional arrangement, the different speeds of electromagnetic oscillation transmission in different directions cause changes in the polarization direction of passing light.
The polarization module uses a pair of polarizing plates to observe the directionality of molecular internal arrangement by seeing the bright light where polarization direction has changed under dark polarization extinction conditions.

Four Steps to Obtain Scientific Tools
段落圖片
In simple terms, it takes just four steps to obtain not only the phone microscope but also other scientific tools through the same process, such as the phone spectrometer, phone macro lens, science building blocks, and many limited-edition hidden tools that are released periodically for everyone to discover!
Step 1: Join the Main Group
段落圖片
Using your personal Facebook account, search for 'Science Maker' to find the main group! You'll also discover many groups starting with 'Science Maker,' each with its own dedicated theme, and you can even apply to become a moderator of a subgroup!
Step 2: Register via Comment

After joining the group, please watch for 'registration announcements,' which are posted periodically by Professor Jiang (Scimage Jiahsu). The post will explain registration rules, and sometimes there may be limited spots available.
Registration is not a confirmation but rather an interest survey. It helps the professor estimate the quantity needed and the required volunteer workforce.
Don't be discouraged if you're not selected initially, as there's usually a waitlist. Keep an eye on announcements, and you'll have a chance to get the tools you want!
Step 3: Voluntary Donation

All scientific instruments in the group are not for sale. The only way to obtain them is through voluntary donation, filling out the delivery form, or picking them up in person at the Science Factory.
The Science Factory is located in New Taipei City. If you cannot personally pick up on the specified date and have no one to help collect it, shipping is recommended. For shipping, the donation amount must exceed the shipping cost.
The creation and promotion of scientific instruments is a labor of love, with each batch completed by Professor Jiang and enthusiastic volunteers during their holidays. Please do not abuse group resources.
The deadline for payment and form submission is noon the day before assembly. Beyond this deadline, you may not receive your items in the current batch.
In-person pickup time is in the afternoon of the assembly day, with specific timing to be confirmed with Professor Jiang.

Step 4: Mail Delivery

If you haven't received your item, check if you got the delivery form submission confirmation email, or leave a comment in the main group.
The day after the last assembly day of each batch is the shipping day. Packages will arrive gradually, and you can start assembly once received!

Earn Points for Hidden Tools
Becoming a desktop scientist in just four steps - isn't it simple? In addition to scientific instruments obtained through voluntary donations, you can join the subgroup 'SciSpot Science Observation Point Collection Area' to share your observations and earn points to redeem special tools.
More interesting tools and observations are waiting to be discovered!
